LEARNING THE LOCAL LANGUAGE

February 2, 2017

Mobile Language Team co-manager and Aboriginal Language Worker Karina Lester recently chatted with Lea McInerey about the current state of language revitalisation and what it means to understand the language of the region you’ve grown up in for Lea’s article in the ‘Learning the local language’ for the Griffith Review.

Lea tells the story of growing up in the small South Australian country town of Clare and not understanding about the traditional owners of the region, the Ngadjuri people. Karina lends her insight from growing up as a Yankunytjatjara language speaker and the process and challenges that confront contemporary language maintenance, documentation and revitalisation in Australia.

Lea’s article ‘Learning the local language’ can be found in the Griffith Review (Volume 55) and can be found here or at your local library.
