Teachers Network Language Resource Production Workshop
March 6, 2026

MLT recently travelled to Port Augusta to facilitate a workshop for teachers on language resource production. Teachers from across the area came along for a hands-on workshop focused on ways to make resources for Aboriginal languages in schools.
The workshop was designed to support teachers who are interested in embedding language into their classrooms but may not know where to start. MLT staff shared practical ideas, simple activities and ready-to-use templates that teachers can adapt to any language. The session was facilitated by MLT Linguistics Officer, Celena, who used examples from her own revival language to demonstrate how teachers can create resources even when only small amounts of the languages are available.

During the session, teachers explored different ways language can be used across everyday classroom activities. The focus was on making language learning interactive, visual, and fun for students.
MLT introduced a set of classroom resource templates that teachers can easily customise with their own language words and images. These included flashcards, memory match games, picture dictionaries, sight-word swat activities, and bingo cards. The templates were designed to make resource creation simple and less time consuming for teachers. Each template has the layout and activity structure prepared, so teachers only need to add a word and a picture in the target language. This allows teachers to quickly create classroom-ready resources without needing to spend hours designing materials from scratch.
Teachers also discussed the different types of resources and how they can be used in the classroom. For example, flashcards can be used for quick vocabulary games, memory match activities help students connect pictures with words, and bingo is a fun way to practise listening and recognition.

By the end of the workshop, teachers left with practical ideas they can immediately use in their classrooms. The goal of the session was to build capacity for schools to support language learning in ways that are engaging, flexible, and community-driven.
MLT will continue to support teachers through the network by sharing templates, ideas, and resources that make it easier to bring language into everyday learning. This workshop was part of MLT First Nations Languages Education Program (FNLEP) that aims to provide training to educators and community members wanting to be involved in language teaching in schools. The Teachers Network Workshop is a great local initiative to further support educators in facilitating language work at their schools.
