defi-Nations [first-languages-in verse] at OUR MOB 2026

The Mobile Language Team recently attended the opening of the Aboriginal visual art exhibition OUR MOB and its language component defi-Nations [first-languages-in-verse] at the Adelaide Festival Centre. OUR MOB features artworks by First Nations artists from across South Australia, who use art to share their stories. defi-Nations [first-languages-in-verse] features original poems that explore the first languages of South Australia.
This year marks twenty years since the first OUR MOB exhibition in 2006. Since then, hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists have presented their work at the annual event. This year, artists of Kokatha, Dieri, Adnyamathanha, Arabana (Arabunna), Kaurna, Pitjantjatjara, and many other First Nations share stories through their artwork. The exhibition also includes a section showcasing artwork by younger artists, providing emerging First Nations artists with an opportunity to develop their work and to participate in this important event.

This year, defi-Nations features eight First Nations poets whose heritage languages include Narrunga, Kaurna, Arabana, Peramangk, Mirning, Wirangu, and Eastern Arrernte. The exhibition celebrates the mother tongues of this country in an accessible, inclusive, and poetic way, empowering artists through their languages and stories. The poems convey each artist’s deep emotional connection to language and Country through powerful personal expression.
